Since 2006, I’ve also nurtured an interest in theatre. I started with designing sets and organizing costumes for Tony Kushner’s The Illusion, a production by the now defunct Malaysian theatre company, The Oral Stage, in 2007. I would work with them again as stage manager for their original production, Seven Deadly Scenes, in 2007.
In 2008, I joined La Trobe Student Theatre and Film, where I spent four years writing, directing, stage managing and operating lights for various plays, such as:
- Howard Barker’s Scenes from the Ecstatic Bible (2009)
- Jonathan Gavin’s A Moment on the Lips (2010)
- An all-female production of Shakespeare’s The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet (2010)
- Dorothy Hewett’s The Chapel Perilous (2011)
This has also led me to work outside university in the Melbourne theatre scene, working in such venues as La Mama Theatre, Northcote Town Hall and fortyfivedownstairs. In 2011 I was stage manager for Thorny Devil Theatre‘s Til Divorce for the Melbourne Comedy Festival and in early 2012 I was the assistant director for my friend Zoey Louise Moonbeam Dawson’s remount of her all-female Romeo and Juliet.
