Hi, my name’s Syar S. Alia and I’m a writer and editor.
I write creative non-fiction and poetry, interviews, arts and culture coverage, and I also rapporteur for advocacy workshops, meetings, and trainings. I have experience in arts administration, public speaking, project coordinating, and facilitation. I’m based around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
My interests are memoir, women’s narratives, marginalized voices, reworked myths and fairytales, tarot, dystopian futures, collage and pastiche, fanfiction and fandom, crafts, theatre and performing arts, history (especially South East Asian history), feminism, human rights, busting binaries and old constructs, memory, death, technology, and cats.

My day job is Arts Manager for Rimbun Dahan‘s art residency programs. Before that I was the editor, social media manager and special projects editor for online publication and platform ISSUE Magazine (2012 – 2014). My writing has appeared in ISSUE Magazine, Baccarat Magazine (Malaysia), Kakiseni, Chew zine, eWaves, AWAM’s zine/newsletter, and online publication Rimbun Dahan Herbal. I’ve worked with various NGOs such as All Women’s Action Society (AWAM), Association for Progressive Communications (APC), International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW), and Knowledge and Rights with Young People through Safer Spaces (KRYSS). From May 2014 until December 2015, I was coordinator and general member of Young Women Making Change Malaysia, an initiative spawned from an advocacy empowerment program by IWRAW Asia Pacific, funded by UN Women. I’ve also collaborated with 3R Malaysia and Projek Dialog.
